招遠地雖然有不少山，但大多數(shù)從古至今都是山中無老虎的，最厲害的陸地猛獸就是狼了，人們常說的馬虎就是指這些縱橫山林的野狼了。

據(jù)說，以前人們說黃昏的時候叫“模糊臉那會兒”(那時模糊和馬虎發(fā)音相同)，狼一般都是在黃昏時才開始活動，此時看不清狼的臉，人很難確定前方是不是有頭狼，所以狼被叫做“馬虎”或者“馬虎臉”。這也是為什么馬虎有不仔細、糊涂的意思，因為它本就是模糊的別字。

不同于大草原的狼群，招遠地的馬虎都是單獨行動的孤狼，它們的主要食物是山上的兔子、獾、刺猬、狍子等，有時候也會闖入人類居住地，禍害一些牲畜，甚至?xí){到人的生命安全。
