不同于大草原的狼群，招遠地的馬虎都是單獨行動的孤狼，它們的主要食物是山上的兔子、獾、刺猬、狍子等，有時候也會闖入人類居住地，禍害一些牲畜，甚至會威脅到人的生命安全。

馬虎很少主動傷人，在饑餓的時候會鋌而走險，闖入村莊，偷吃家禽和牲畜。人們總結(jié)出一個比較有效的經(jīng)驗，馬虎喜歡對體型小于自己，或身高低于它站直高度的動物下手，除了被動防衛(wèi)傷人外，它襲擊的人主要是小孩子。

到了五十年代，民兵組織活躍，可能是基于除害或填肚子的目的和需求，他們有組織的獵殺馬虎，直到把它們消滅干凈，后來的人們就再也見不到馬虎了。可是用馬虎嚇唬孩子這些手段卻流傳了下來，成為了一種風俗。
